HOW DARE YOU
2022 -2023
Acrylic & oil paint, oil pastels, charcoal, conte, recycled fabric on raw canvas,
7ft x 8ft
The masks provide a connection to those who came before me. They express parts ofmyself I have yet to experience. Growing up within the confines of a devout Catholic household, I found myself stifled, unable to fully embrace my sensuality and explore the depths of my own body. It was arealm shrouded in fear and inhibition, a domain that I longed to navigate with uninhibited freedom. Painting has been transformative for me, healing me in many ways that I cancount and allowing me to inhabit roles and personas that I am not yet fully comfortablerevealing.
In this self-portrait series, I embark on a journey of self-determination and cultural reclamation. Each canvas becomes a battleground, reflecting the fight to reclaim my essence and the complexities of my being. Through bold, vulnerable, and unrestrained poses, I strive to capture the fullness of my authentic self, shedding the layers of self-doubt imposed by colonial ideology. The masks I wear are deliberate acts of defiance, symbolic tools to explore and embody the various aspects of my ancestral belief system. Each mask serves as a window into the heart of my heritage: the fight for cultural survival, the preservation of diverse traditions, the honoring of those who came before me, the liberation from the burdens of colonial control, and most importantly, a celebration of the cyclical nature of life that transcends colonial dominance.
